The name of the capital city, Lucca seems to derive from a term Celtic / Ligurian: "Luk", indicating a "marshy place, a light mirror." Contemporary archaeologists date the first settlements to Etruscan times, but it is certain that the history of Lucca is very old and the testimonies of human presence spread throughout the territory. The city of Lucca with figures never exceeded the Roman city, the network of streets and medieval alleys, the great Renaissance buildings enclosed by the mighty Renaissance city walls tell of the over two thousand years of history and glorious past of small independent republic in which flourished trades and crafts. In this city full of history was born and formed one of the greatest talents of Lucca: Maestro Giacomo Puccini.
