The Institution for Peace of the Province Lucca in collaboration with the Historical Institute of Resistance and of Contemporary Age and the Municipality of Lucca, organizes in occasion of the Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27) and of the National Memorial Day of the Exiles and Foibe (February 10) a series of events: meetings for schools, films, conferences, exhibitions and events open to all citizens.

The main theme this year is racism, eighty years after the introduction of the "racial laws", issued in 1938 on several occasions by fascism, with their culmination in the provisions for the defense of the Italian race of November 17, proclaimed triumphantly by Mussolini, countersigned by the King, officially supported at all levels, from the Manifesto of Racist Scientists to the Declaration on the Race issued by the Grand Council of Fascism.

The theme is primarily faced by two exhibitions held at Palazzo Ducale in Lucca: the first titled "La razza nemica, la propaganda antisemita nazista e fascista" (by the Fondazione Museo della Shoah in Rome), helps us to understand how it was possible that hundreds of thousands of ordinary people were able to participate actively in the persecution and killing of the Jewish minority in Europe. The exhibition will be inaugurated on Thursday January 18 at 5:00 pm in Palazzo Ducale until February 10, then it will be hosted at the Mont'Alfonso Fortress (Castelnuovo di Garfagnana) from February 15 to March 2 and, subsequently, at the Palazzo della Cultura in Cardoso (Stazzema) from March 9 to 18, 2018.

The second exhibition is titled "Porrajmos, altre tracce sul sentiero per Auschwitz" and is presented in a new version by the Istituto di Cultura Sinta, Nevo Drom Association, Sinti Italiani Prato Association. The exhibition traces, through stories, the drama of Porrajmos, the extermination of Roma and Sinti, a page of history certainly not very well known. This exhibition is inaugurated on Saturday, January 20 at 10:00 am (for schools) and at 4:30 pm (for all citizens) with the presence of co-curator Luca Bravi. The exhibition will be open in Palazzo Ducale until  February 10 and, subsequently, will be hosted in Borgo a Mozzano (February 13-23), Barga (February 26 - March 11) and Castiglione Garfagnana (March 17 - April 8).

Both exhibitions will be open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.

In Lucca (Real Collegio) from February 17 to March 4 is scheduled the photographic exhibition "In the memory" by Luca Romano, exhibition, which thanks to the striking images in black and white, allows the visitor to enter virtually in the terrible atmosphere of the Auschwitz camp.

Starting from this main theme, other branches of memory will animate the initiatives throughout the provincial area.
