Giovanni Lazzarini, acclaimed protagonist of the Carnival of Viareggio, painter and float-builder, is known in the world of art with the pseudonym of "Menghino". He dedicated himself to painting encouraged by Uberto Bonetti, whose sister Bianca was his wife, and from the beginning he revealed his singular character. In the world of Carnival, in addition to his talent as a valued performer, Menghino is famous for having adopted the topics of Italian and international political satire transforming them into paper-maché, while he has elaborated his personal vision of Viareggio into paintings with characters connected to the port.
More than sixty works, including paintings and sculptures, are displayed in the exhibition to rediscover and illustrate the work of a great Master strongly linked to the town as he describes: "I tried to paint this particular Viareggio on the thread of memory, with stories and real life, between reality and imagination. The technical means of craftsmanship, an almost "vernacular" way of expressing myself, my long observations of the ex-voto in the church of Sant' Andrea, before I discovered Lorenzo Viani, made me fully agree with those who want to put my work in the great thread of art and popular culture. "
The exhibition is inaugurated on Friday, January 26, 2018, at 5:00 pm.
