The Holy Face road was in the Middle Ages an alternative route to the more famous Via Francigena. It crossed the valleys of the Garfagnana and Mediavalle of the Serchio and reached Lucca, an important place of worship, for the presence of the wooden relic statue of the Holy Face.
Going through one of the countless stages of the Via del Volto Santo is certainly an exciting experience that brings us back in time for over a thousand years. The 17,5 km of our route is easy and winds up on dirt roads and local unpaved roads, touching the main centers of Garfagnana (Piazza al Serchio, S. Romano and Castelnuovo) as well as the well-known fortress of the Valley, Verrucole, the lake Of Pontecosi, the village of Sambuca, in a scenery enclosed between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
